For about a month, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office had been working a run of heavy machinery thefts across its territory with nothing much to show for it. The break, when it came, came off a tracker. It had kept broadcasting from one of the stolen machines, and the signal led deputies to a property near Russellville, in Putnam County. What they found there ran well past the machines they were looking for. An International semi truck with a trailer still loaded with fertilizer and seed, a Caterpillar mini excavator, and a couple of skid steers. The recovered equipment ran past 500000 dollars, all of it tied to a ring that had been working in at least seven Indiana counties and reaching into Illinois and Missouri. Two men, Scott Rector and Roy Poynter, were charged, and the office made clear it expected the count to grow.
